The Wastwater is designed for people in a hurry to get out on the water. The build time of this hard chined boat is approximately 12 hours (plus however long you wish to take on the painting). The Wastwater 16 is an open boat with a full height buoyant tank at each end. It can be paddled using either double ended paddles or Canadian style with single paddles. It can also be sailed. It is easily carried on the roof rack of a car.

The boat has glass fabric set in epoxy on the outside bottom of the hull to provide abrasion resistance in case it is dragged up a rocky beach. Some customers make a slight modification to the thwart to provide additional dry storage for camping equipment etc. Being a light vessel this boat sails well with a sail on an unstayed mast which can be broken down and carried inside the boat when not in use. For greater flexibility the boat does not have seats but, for those who prefer not to kneel, the instructions contain detailed drawings of several types of seats that can be made.

So many customers are adopting the philosophy of “sailing when you can and paddling when you have to” that we have incorporated an extended deck and washboard in the standard boat ready for the installation of a mast. The sailing option and/or rudder can be fitted after a season or two of paddling.

The boat also now comes with rear coaming for comfort and with 2 screw-in watertight bulkhead hatches to allow small items to be stored in the dry.

The Wastwater 16 is wide and stable with a slight rocker providing a perfect compromise between good tracking and manoeuvrability. It is ideal for exploring wide rivers, canals and lakes. This is the perfect platform for bird watchers and photographers yet doubles as an easily controlled fun boat for children. It is light enough to be carried some distance to more remote waters.

For those in a real hurry to get afloat we offer weekend supervised build in our lake side workshop. We assist with the building of your boat from the selecting of the wood to the strapping of a new Wastwater 16 to your roof rack.

The original version of this Open Boat. This version was primarily for schools and youth groups who build several and heavily customise the boats. However, the version has been withdrawn now that most schools take the Lightweight Version.

Although we don't have a picture or experience of this one of our customers has fitted a pedal power unit.

Sailing option on a Wastwater Lightweight.

(Sail extra)

Allows the Wastwater to be sailed.

Includes:

Leeboard, leeboard bracket, mast, mast step, booms, skeg.

A sail plan is included so that you can make a sail or we can supply sails to your specification.

A rudder is not essential but it makes sailing slightly easier.
This rudder can be raised and lowered. Steering is by a tiller.

The hull is assembled and given two coats of epoxy and is, therefore, ready to use. However, we encourage customers to paint their boats for safety reasons and varnish it for a high shine.
